Ghirardelli Associate is currently looking for an experienced Resident Engineer to be based out of our Roseville office. The Resident Engineer will be responsible for successful completion of construction management projects and shall report directly to the Project Manager. Additional responsibilities include attending and running client and contractor meetings; reviewing plans and specifications and ensuring compliance with project documents; providing project documentation in the form of letters, Requests for Information (RFI)/Submittal responses, contract change orders (CCOs), etc.; conducting field inspections; supervising project inspection teams; and providing technical guidance and quality assurance. This position requires extensive client interaction and coordination of all jobsite activities.

This position may include but not limited to:

• Oversee day to day adminstration of construction projects for clients in the field office

• Monitoring of construction contractor progress, activities, use of approved materials, and use of approved equipment

• Review and respond to contractor’s submittals, RFIs, letters and evaluate contractor’s suggestions for minor changes to contract requirements; review contractor’s progress schedules, certificates and operations and maintenance manuals, review and process monthly progress payments, review NOPCs and provide recommendations, schedule material testinging, review material testing data, perform independent engineer’s estimate for Change orders, negotiate change orders, keep tracing logs for RFis, submittals CCOs, and contingency balances, perform quantity take offs, read staking notes.

• Comminicate daily with project’s construction inspector(s) and review and sign their daily report

• Document construction progress through daily engineer’s report; conduct weekly progress meeting and prepare meeting summaries; maintain project files and prepare and process change orders.

• Prepare written documents (i.e. correspondence, proposals, reports, performance evaluations and other construction documents

• Inspect and review project to monitor compliance with the contract documents including traffic control plans, safety codes, SWPPP requirements, environmental documents and other regulations

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field.
  • Registered CA Professional Engineer’s License is required
  • Minimum of 4+ years experience to demonstrate possession of the knowledge and skills necessary to manage Construction Projects and/or work as a resident engineer with public agencies.
  • Strong communication, verbal and written are required.
  • Advanced computer skills
  • Strong project management and client management skills are required.
  • Caltrans experience is highly desired
  • Experience in both roadway and structures projects a PLUS

POSITION SUMMARY:

The construction inspector will be responsible for inspecting construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build roadways, bridges, traffic signals, airports and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications; The construction inspector may serve as the only inspector on a construction project, assist in overseeing construction inspection activities for very large or complex projects within a district, or conduct statewide construction inspection activities for ongoing projects.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Attends pre-construction meetings.
  • Prepares a written daily report documenting construction activities, including but not limited to contractor’s labor, equipment, daily construction progress, project site visitors, non-conforming work, safety issues, traffic control measures, field measured quantiles, field discussions with the contractor and public, daily project photos, change order work performed, and weather conditions.
  • Prepares a timesheet daily which records all hours worked, along with vacation, holidays, and sick leave taken.
  • Consults with Resident Engineers, Bridge Engineers, Project Engineers, other project representatives, and contractors’ personnel on work progress and construction issues.
  • Prepares quantity calculation sheets to support monthly progress payments to the contractor.
  • Coordinates field testing of construction materials and construction surveys.
  • Coordinates communication between district/division/Department of Public Safety and other external entities.
  • Ensures contractors build roadways, bridges and related highway structures and/or airport improvements in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Monitors project phasing and traffic control plans for compliance with approved safety standards.
  • Observes and inspects ongoing construction work.
  • Performs construction record-keeping activities; recommends payments to contractors; prepares reports.
  • Trains and mentors less experienced inspectors on work methods.
  • Documents work progress and issues arising throughout the duration of the project.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
  • Must be familiar with construction inspection techniques associated with the construction of roadways, highways, bridges, light rail, heavy rail, airports, utilities, marine facilities, ports, and other infrastructure facilities, as required by the current assignment.

The structures inspector will be responsible for inspecting, documenting, and coordinating field testing of materials for all structure work on a project. The structures inspector will oversee the contractor’s construction methods and workmanship to ensure structures such as bridges, retaining walls, overhead signs, and other related structures are built in accordance with plans and specifications. The structures inspector may serve as the only inspector on a construction project, assist in overseeing structures inspection activities for very large or complex projects within a district, or conduct statewide structures inspection activities for ongoing projects.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  

  • Ensures all structures-related activities are compliant with the project, state, and federal safety requirements.
  • Coordinates communication between district/division/Department of Public Safety and other external entities.
  • Must be familiar with construction inspection techniques associated with the construction of bridges, roadways, highways, light rail, heavy rail, airports, utilities, marine facilities, ports, and other infrastructure facilities, as required by the current assignment.
  • Ensures contractors build bridges and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Ensures temporary structures such as falsework, and their submittals, are reviewed, authorized, verified, certified, and inspected for compliance with the contract, shop drawings, and licensed engineer’s design.
  • Attends pre-construction meetings.
  • Prepares a written daily report documenting construction activities, including but not limited to contractor’s labor, equipment, daily construction progress, project site visitors, non-conforming work, safety issues, traffic control measures, field measured quantiles, field discussions with the contractor and public, daily project photos, change order work performed, and weather conditions.

Construction Inspector

POSITION SUMMARY

The construction inspector will be responsible for inspecting construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build roadways, bridges, traffic signals, airports and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications; may serve as the only inspector on a construction project or assist in overseeing construction inspection activities for very large or complex projects within a district or conduct statewide construction inspection activities for ongoing projects.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Attends pre-construction meetings
  • Prepares a written daily report documenting construction activities, including but not limited to: contractor labor, equipment, daily construction progress, project site visitors, non-conforming work, safety issues, traffic control, field measured quantiles, field discussions with the contractor and public, takes daily project photos, change order work performed, and weather.
  • Prepare a timesheet daily which records all hours worked, along with vacation, holidays, and sick leave taken.
  • Consults with Resident Engineers, Bridge Engineers, Project Engineers, other project representatives, and contractors’ superintendents on work progress and construction problems.
  • Prepares quantity calculation sheets to support monthly progress payments to construction contractors.
  • Coordinates field testing of construction materials and construction surveys.
  • Coordinates communication between district/division/Department of Public Safety and other external entities.
  • Ensures contractors build roadways, bridges and related highway structures and/or airport improvements in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Monitors project phasing and traffic control plans for compliance with approved safety standards
  • Observes and inspects ongoing construction work.
  • Performs construction record-keeping activities; recommends payments to contractors; prepares reports.
  • Trains and mentors less experienced inspectors on work methods.
  • Documents work progress and issues arising throughout scope of project.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
  • Must be familiar with construction inspection techniques associated with the construction of roadways, highways, bridges, light rail, heavy rail, airports, utilities, marine facilities, ports, and other infrastructure facilities, when required by their current assignments.
  • Must be familiar with regulatory requirements such as CalOsha, Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP), US Department of Fish and Wildlife, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, Army Corp of Engineers, Regional Water Quality Control Boards, and other regulatory agencies as required.

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field, a valid certificate as an Engineer-in-Training or licensed as a Professional Civil Engineer in California, and 2 years of experience performing construction inspection of roadways. or A master’s or doctorate degree in civil engineering and a minimum of 2 years of experience in roadway construction inspection of roadways.
  • Or Two years of education beyond the 12th grade in engineering or related field and a minimum of 4 years of experience performing construction inspection of roadways. 
  • Strong communication, verbal and written are required.
  • Basic computer skills required. Microsoft Word, Excel
  • Caltrans Experience, highly desired.
  • Knowledge of Caltrans and Local Agency Standard Plans and Specifications and Greenbook.

Resident Engineer

Ghirardelli Associates, currently looking to hire a Resident Engineer with experience in to be based out of our Oakland Office. This is an opportunity to work with experienced engineers dedicated to working on civil and technical engineering and construction management.

this position may include but not limited to:

  • Strong project management and client management skills are required.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Frequently use safety equipment such as a hard hat and safety vest; work in areas not well ventilated such as utility vaults; work outdoors or work on uneven ground or floor spaces; work at elevations above ground level. Must be able to work in all weather conditions and can work any day of the week both night and day. Available for after hour emergency response.
